Daily Drive – Perfect Imperfection

0saves
There is perfection in the imperfect.

All too often, we get caught up in the trap of thinking that everything has to be perfect, and everyone has to be perfect.  But to what standards do we hold the world?

Everything on earth has purpose, nothing is a mistake.  If you believe this, then you must also believe that the imperfect is a part of the plan.

Where there is hunger, there is an opportunity to help feed the hungry.

Where there is illness for one person, there is an opportunity for another person to show love.

When you fail, you gain knowledge and experience to do better the next time.

Recognize imperfection as a part of God’s plan.  Enjoy this contradiction, and find the opportunity to be loving, forgiving, and compassionate when you notice it. Especially when the person needing love, forgiveness, and compassion is yourself.

Daily Drive – Overcoming Disappointment

0saves
Disappointed. Let down. Saddened.

You can let go of these feelings for good, because:

The contented person cannot be disappointed.

If you seek out contentment and inner peace, the actions of the outside world cannot disappoint you.

If you expect nothing, you cannot be let down.

If you love everything and everyone compassionately, you cannot feel hate.

Daily Drive – Allow Yourself To Be Yourself

0saves
Consider the life of a tree.

A tree starts small like all of creation. Nothing more than a seed. It grows slowly, almost methodically, little by little, year after year.

A tree goes through changes every year. Going dormant in the winter, appearing close to dead, then coming back to life in the spring with new buds and new leaves. Then, come winter, it loses its leaves, going back to its dormant, lifeless state.

The tree does not rush or compete with other trees to be the tallest, the greenest, or the strongest. It does not get angry, frustrated, or burden itself with feelings of guilt, shame, or regret for not being able to support a tire swing if its limbs are not long or strong enough, even if someone else really wishes that they were. It does not strive to be the best tree it can be, and it does not obsess about the shape of its trunk or the color of its leaves.

A tree doesn’t do any of these things. Yet, it is still perfect. It was made to be a tree, and it is simply a tree.

You have purpose just like this. You don’t need to try to be an elm when you were made to be a maple. If you weren’t made to hold a swing, you don’t have to try to change so that you can. You don’t need to obsess over the appearance of your branches or your leaves.

This is what it means to live with purpose. Learn who you are and completely accept and appreciate that person. No need to strive to be someone or something that you are not.

When you accept and love yourself as you are; then, and only then, will you begin to live the life you dream of. A life filled with joy and meaning and purpose and passion and love. Allow yourself to be yourself…its who you have always been anyway.

Have a joyful day!

Daily Drive – Need Or Want?

0saves
Most of the things you think you need are really just things that you want.

There is a big difference between needs and wants isn’t there? While our culture might say that you “need” to have HDTV, that’s really a want.  You don’t need to have TV at all.

You might think that you need to eat, since you haven’t eaten in several hours, but you actually want to eat.  The human body can survive for weeks without food.  You won’t die if you skip the drive thru.

The fact is, many of the things you buy, eat, or do under the guise of “need” are really not necessities at all.

Do you need expensive hair products, fancy clothes, or delicious foods?  No!

Start understanding how much of your life is driven by your wants.  Being conscious about the choices involved can help you get your finances, your waistline, and your time management under control starting today.

When you realize that you’ve been spending much of your time and money on wants, you’ll be able to get a grasp on what you actually need.  Then, you can begin to make choices, realizing that you could survive completely on far, far less than what you already have.

In fact, you may realize that the things that you have because of want are things that you could give away to others who really need them.  Does someone else need a nice dress shirt to help them get a job so they can pay for their own home?  Does someone else who hasn’t been able to afford a meal for days need the snack that you were going to eat even though you’re not hungry?

Imagine a world where we all lived solely with what we need, giving the rest to those who are without.  You can be an example of this kind of selfless love today.

Daily Drive – Best. Weekend. Ever.

0saves
It’s Saturday!

Would you like this to be the best weekend ever?  I’ve decided that it’s going to be…and I’m writing this on Wednesday in the middle of the night.

How, you may ask, can I decide several days in advance that it’s going to be the best weekend ever?

Because every single one of us has the ability to make this decision for ourselves, every day of our lives! Remember, there is no path to joy.  Joy IS the path.

Here are some of the steps I’m going to take  this weekend.

  • I’m going to allow life to unfold, rather than forcing my will upon it.
  • I’m going to spend time doing things that align with my purpose.
  • I’m going to let all negativity pass, regardless of where it comes from or how personal it is
  • I’m going to take time in complete silence to pray, think, and do nothing.
  • I’m going to smile, relax, and be eternally grateful for everything I experience.

I’d like to invite you to join me.  Make this the best weekend ever, and never, ever let it stop.

Have a joyful day!

Daily Drive – Human Fuel

0saves
steaming cup of coffeeWhat is the fuel that powers you?

I’m not talking about food. Or caffeine (although some might argue this). Or gasoline.

I’m talking about you.  Internally. What keeps you going?  Is it motivation or inspiration?

There is a reason that you do everything that you do.  A driving force that compels your actions. The internal thought process that your mind goes through in deciding where to act and where to wait. It will persuade you to praise or to criticize.  It will encourage you to change or implore you to stay the same.

Here is just a short list of some of the answers you might be thinking of:

  • Fear
  • Purpose
  • Need
  • Hate
  • Revenge
  • Passion
  • To-Do lists
  • Love
  • Your calendar
  • Desire
  • Lust
  • What someone will think of you
  • Crisis

Take some time right now and really consider this question again.  What drives you? What is the motivating force behind your regular day-to-day actions?

Now, is that what you really want it to be?  Or, to put that question differently, are you driven by the draw of something positive, or the pull of something negative?

If you find yourself in a position where you want to make a change, the unchangeable first step is this. Slow Down.

Before you can truly be in charge of your life, and be driven by something positive like passion, purpose, faith, or love, you need to s…l…o…w…d…o…w…n.

Allow yourself the chance to breathe.  Think.  Feel.  Love.  Appreciate.

For me, discovering my purpose and my passion didn’t happen until I allowed myself permission to sit quietly and think.  Without my iPhone, the news, a book.  Just me, a cup of tea, and pure silence.  Then, and only then, did I realize that I needed to be living differently.

Don’t allow who you are to fall victim to something as eternally inconsequential as your to-do list, or your fear of what someone else will think of you.

Daily Drive – Better Memory In One Easy Step

0saves
Living out a meaningful, purpose driven life is not an easy task.  It takes focus, hard work, and sometimes a whole lot of patience.

Filling your life with distractions doesn’t make it any easier!

Look around you right now.  What does your work space look like?  Is it cluttered or organized?  If it is cluttered, does the clutter impair your your ability to focus?

Could a less cluttered workspace even help you improve your memory?

In this article in the Journal Of Neuroscience, the authors studied the effect on visual recollection and attention to detail from increasing amounts of visual clutter.

Some interesting findings from the study:

  • Recalling information requires the use of “visual imagery.”  You remember things by seeing them with your mind’s eye.
  • Participants in the study in an totally empty room were able to recall more information than those in a cluttered room.
  • Participants with their eyes closed recalled the most information.

The full conclusion of this study reveals that the more cluttered the environment surrounding you is, the more difficult it is to use visual imagery, therefore making your ability to recall information accurately increasingly challenging.

So, would you like to be able to remember things better?

CLEAN YOUR WORKSPACE!

I desperately needed to take my own advice, and I did.  Check out the before and after pictures.

This process took about a half hour.  Now, I’m not going to pretend that I organized that entire mess in 30 minutes, but I did throw out a huge pile of unnecessary paper (some garbage, some scanned and saved to my computer).  I also found a couple of things that I’ve been missing.  But most importantly, I got rid of the visual clutter…the things that distract my mind, making it more difficult to remember.

You tell me.  Which workspace would allow you to focus better?

Daily Drive – Knowledge Or Wisdom?

0saves
Are you looking to feel more fulfilled and find more meaning as you go through each day?  Try seeking wisdom rather than gaining knowledge.

Wisdom and knowledge.  These two words are traded out for each other in many conversations, as if they mean the same thing.  But do they?

Definitions from Merriam-Webster:

Wisdom: The ability to discern inner qualities and relationships; good sense.

Knowledge: The fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience.

These are two very different words!  The former seeks to understand internally, the latter seeks to learn through familiarity with external experiences.  So what does it look like to approach a situation from a wisdom-seeking perspective rather than a knowledge-seeking perspective?

Let’s look at an example.

Imagine yourself at the grocery store.  As you approach the checkout lanes, you notice one line shorter than the rest and move towards it.  As you  step into that line, someone else appears angry as they step in behind you.

Looking at this situation from a knowledge-seeking perspective may tell you that you were there first, and that the person behind you should relax and wait their turn.  You experienced the fact that you got there first.  You are familiar with waiting in lines, and you know that whoever gets there first gets the next spot.

A wisdom-seeking perspective on the other hand may seek to understand why they are angry.  What upset them?  Are they in a hurry? Is there something else going on in their life that is causing them to have a bad day?  Maybe they have a sick child waiting at home.  Or perhaps they just received some bad news.

Seeking wisdom rather than knowledge is the process of thinking with your heart rather than your head.  It’s the process of showing empathy rather than looking out for yourself.  And perhaps most importantly, it’s about showing love for everyone you meet.

Have a joyful day!

Daily Drive – Eliminate Negativity

0saves
Seek to eliminate sources of negative thoughts from your life. One such source is prevalent in our culture and easily disposed of.

The news.

About 30 years ago, the news was confined to the morning newspaper and the nightly news shows. Small bits of time and paper. Because of the limited distribution, the purveyors of information had to provide the highest possible quality content and journalism to attract your time.

Today’s world is different.  With several cable news channels running 24/7 news, websites, radio, tv, newspapers, blogs and others, there is a much larger volume of time and space to be filled…and more competition for your attention.

This is why we see headlines like this:

Five dead in tornado

Man shot to death outside popular restaurant

Couple swindled out of their life savings

In the competition for your attention (more viewers = more advertising revenue), news channels have eschewed high quality journalism and important information for shock headlines and useless information.

None of it brings you closer to living a joyful and meaningful life.

I encourage you to take a news holiday.  Remove it all from your life for a day.  Maybe longer if you enjoy it.  No TV news, no news apps on your iPhone or Droid, no news websites, and no newspapers.

Instead of taking in all the bad news about the world, spend time doing something positive.  Read a book.  Go for a walk.  Pray or meditate.  Sit quietly and do nothing.  The possibilities are endless, just do something positive.  Notice how you feel at the end of the day.  Are you in a better mood?

Remove the sources of negativity in your life so your mind isn’t preoccupied with negative thoughts. Doing so will help you find the inner peace and calm needed to realize true success and live your life’s purpose fully and completely.

Have a joyful day!

Daily Drive – Trust

0saves
Trust in the goodness of your fellow man.

The creator of all things is inherently good.  Therefore, all that is created is good.

Some may lose their way, others may make bad choices.  Yet, at the very center, all of mankind is still good.

Find this good in those you encounter along the path.  Tell them the good that you see in them.  Show them real, meaningful love and appreciation, especially if they disagree with you or have different beliefs. Every person deserves to be caught when they fall.

Perhaps most importantly, trust them.  Never waver in your trust.  You may need to show tough love to someone who has done a bad thing, but let it always be more about the “love” than it is about the “tough.”

After all, what is the purpose of being good but to be an example and inspiration for those who have lost their way?

Have a joyful day!
