Daily Drive – I Wasn’t Listening

0saves
Have you ever heard the phrase “I do my best thinking in the shower”? Maybe you’ve said it yourself.

Why is this such a common statement?

I think it is because being in the shower is nearly the ONLY time that most people spend in silence.  Anywhere else you go, the phones are ringing, your iPhone is tempting you, the TV or radio is on, along with many other distractions.

You cannot be your most brilliant self in the presence of constant distractions.  You need to create time and space for yourself to be silent and still.  When you can let yourself think and you give yourself the ability to listen to your thoughts, you can begin to understand your own life.  You can decipher your life’s purpose and the actions that will bring it to fruition.

For me, this silent time comes when everyone else in my house has gone to bed.  I am frequently awake for several hours after everyone else has gone to sleep…time which I used to waste away with late night television. Now, I spend the time much more productively.

Instead of watching the news, I read a book or study the Bible.

Instead of watching late night talk shows, I go for a late night walk.

Instead of eating an unhealthy midnight snack, I sit silently with a cup of tea.

My life truly started to change with these little modifications in lifestyle.  Maybe for you, the time of day, or the replaced activities will be different, but try to pick one or two non-productive activities and replace them with silence.

When I made this change, I found that everything I needed to live the life I had always wanted had always been there, right inside of my own heart.  My little voice was talking to me, telling me what I was put on this earth to do and giving me all of the steps necessary to make it happen.

I just wasn’t listening. Now I do, and the feeling is absolutely wonderful.

Have a joyful day!
