Living Without Plans

0saves
I don’t know what will happen today. Think of the limitless possibilities of that statement.

What if you could live every day this way; taking things as they come rather than making plans?

Earlier this year, Dawn and I went on vacation to celebrate our first anniversary. We had our plane tickets, a place to stay, some money, and tickets for a boat ride for one day. Aside from that, we had no plans.

It was liberating. Even though we didn’t quite know how we were going to get from the airport to our hotel, I didn’t mind. I was confident that we’d find our way. Each day was left to itself with the chance to have unexpected conversations with strangers, to hang out with people we just met, really to just go with the flow.

Sure, this was a vacation. Its easy to have no plans when you’re on vacation. But could it be just as easy to live without plans every day?

Think about it. The plans we make are just predictions. You might be planning on a meeting tomorrow at 11, then to have lunch with a friend at 12:30. But do you know that these things will go as you planned? You could miss your meeting if you’re sick, or if traffic is bad. The meeting could take longer than expected which could make you late to lunch.

Any number of things can derail our plans, which is why they are nothing more than predictions. So if we can’t really plan anything with certainty, why do we make them at all?

What if we just wake up each morning and pursue the things that excite us most? Instead of trying to control the moments, being open to the unfolding of each moment.

Try it sometime. Throw out your plans for an hour and decide to just do whatever excites you. As you do this, see what new things emerge. It might sound nebulous, or maybe just lazy, but it’s no less concrete than the plans we make that have no promises of happening.

Life is fluid. When we acknowledge this fact, we can do something with it. Instead of fighting the inevitability of change, embrace the chaos that will be a part of your life, whether you like it or not.

Have a joyful day!
